Why take this action?
To reproduce, birds need a place to raise their young. This place should be safe from predators and, depending on the birds, have different characteristics. We advise you to find out about the birds that frequent the surroundings of your school by doing the Birds of the Gardens protocol. Be careful though, it is not always the same birds that you will observe between winter and spring!
To help birds have babies, you can build and install birdhouses.

Find recycled materials, tools...
You can recover wooden planks from European pallets (they can be recovered from merchants for example).
Warning ! Be careful that your pallet contains the inscription HT (high temperature) between the inscriptions EPAL and EUR. If you see the inscription MB do not use it, it has been treated with methyl bromide, a fumigant that is very bad for the environment. In general, pay attention to the treatments that may have been applied to the wood.

Budget to plan
If you plan to buy wooden planks you will need to plan the cost of the plank. If you are building your birdhouse from recycled materials, then you will just have to plan the price of screws, nails, wire and the hinge.
How to do it concretely?
Choose a location:
The nest box must be installed in a place where there is less foot traffic and less noise. It is also necessary to avoid areas that are too shaded and prevailing winds. It is possible to fix it on a sufficiently strong tree or a structure of the school (post, wall, etc.). It must be high up (minimum 2.5 m), in an isolated place with reduced access to limit predators.
Construction of the nest box:
You can build your birdhouse in the fall because it must be installed before January. Indeed the birds start very early the selection of the place where they will raise their young.
For construction, you must start by choosing the type of nest box to build because depending on its size and shape, it will not attract the same species.

Réalise un inventaire juste après la mise en place tes nichoirs :
Réaliser des protocoles Vigie-Nature École te permettra de savoir si tes actions ont un effet sur la biodiversité ! Pense à faire des inventaires (Oiseaux des jardins) avant de commencer à installer la mangeoire, tu pourras ainsi vérifier si la présence des oiseaux augmente.
Pour chacun de nos protocoles, il faut définir une zone d’observation qui permet au chercheur de connaître le contexte dans lequel tu fais tes observations. Pour certains de ces protocoles, on te demandera si des espèces sont présentes, pense à actualiser ces informations si ces espèces apparaissent dans ta friche (des orties ou des ronces par exemple).

Entretien le nichoir
Le nichoir doit être nettoyé tous les ans à l'automne. Il faut utiliser de l'eau bouillante et ensuite bien le laisser sécher pour éviter le développement de maladies et de champignons.
Documente l'évolution de la biodiversité !
Observe régulièrement les oiseaux, en faisant des observations pour le protocole Oiseaux des Jardins, en les photographiant… Cela te permettra de suivre l’évolution de leurs visites. N’hésite pas à demander de l’aide à des adultes de l’établissement comme ton professeur de SVT.
